Types of UPVC Pipe Fittings and Their Uses

Types of UPVC Pipe Fittings and Where Each One Is Used in Plumbing

UPVC pipe fittings can be grouped by the job they do in a plumbing line: joining straight lengths, changing direction, creating branches, changing pipe size, connecting to threaded fixtures, closing a line or connecting to a tank, controlling flow, and moving between pipe systems. Knowing these groups makes it easier to read a plumbing drawing, prepare a material list and discuss a layout with a plumber.

This guide covers common fittings in the ASTM plumbing range and where each is typically used. Size, schedule and pressure suitability should always be matched to the pipe and the line. The full range is listed on the Finolex ASTM pipes and fittings page.

Fittings that join straight lengths

A coupler joins two pipes of the same size in a straight line. It is used to extend a run, or to repair a damaged section after the faulty length has been cut out.

A union also joins two pipes, but it can be opened later without cutting the line. Unions are commonly placed next to pumps, filters, meters and valves, where a component may need to be removed for maintenance or replacement.

Fittings that change direction

A 90° elbow turns a line at a right angle and is one of the most frequently used fittings in any layout. A 45° elbow makes a gentler change of direction, and two 45° elbows are often used together to offset a line around an obstacle.

A sweep bend has a larger radius than a standard elbow, giving a more gradual turn. A step-over bend lets one pipe cross over another pipe running at the same level, which is useful where lines cross along a wall or floor.

Fittings that create branches

A tee creates a branch at 90° from the main line, for example to feed a washbasin or a cistern from a bathroom supply line. A cross tee creates two opposite branches from the same point. A reducing tee creates a branch smaller than the main line, which is common where a larger header feeds smaller fixture lines.

Fittings that change pipe size

A reducer connects two pipes of different sizes in a straight line. A reducing bush fits into a larger socket so that a smaller pipe or fitting can be connected. A reducing 90° elbow changes direction and size in a single fitting, which can save a joint in tight spaces.

Fittings that connect to threaded fixtures

Taps, mixers, valves, pumps and many metal components connect through threads rather than solvent cement, and threaded adapters bridge the two. A male threaded adapter (MTA) has external threads, while a female threaded adapter (FTA) has internal threads. Versions with a metal insert, such as the MTA with metal insert and FTA with metal insert, are commonly used where the threaded joint meets a metal fitting or tap.

Similarly, an elbow with a brass insert is often used at wall points where a tap or mixer is fixed. A hex nipple joins two female-threaded components. For any threaded joint, use a thread sealant suitable for PVC and avoid over-tightening, which can stress plastic threads.

Fittings that close a line or connect to tanks

An end cap closes the end of a pipe, either permanently or until a future extension. A threaded end plug closes a threaded outlet and is often used to seal wall points before fixtures are installed or during pressure testing. A tank nipple provides an outlet through the wall of a water tank so that a supply line can be connected.

Fittings that control and protect flow

A UPVC ball valve opens or shuts off flow with a quarter turn. Ball valves are commonly placed at the tank outlet, at the start of each bathroom or kitchen line, and before equipment, so that one section can be isolated without shutting down the whole system. A compact ball valve is a smaller-format version of the same function.

A non-return valve allows flow in one direction only and is often used on pump delivery lines to limit backflow. A Y strainer holds back debris carried in the water and is typically installed before components that are sensitive to particles, such as pumps, meters or valves. Strainers need periodic cleaning, so place them where they can be reached.

Transition fittings and pipe supports

ASTM UPVC, CPVC and agriculture PVC pipes follow different dimensional standards, so they are not joined directly. A UPVC-CPVC converter coupler is used where a cold water UPVC line meets a CPVC line, and a UPVC-agri converter coupler connects ASTM plumbing pipe to agriculture PVC pipe.

Pipe clips and powder-coated metal clamps hold pipes in place along walls and ceilings. Adequate support helps prevent sagging and reduces stress on joints, especially on exposed runs.

How to prepare a fitting list before buying

Start with a simple line diagram showing the water source, main line, branches, fixtures and valves. Then count fittings by function: each change of direction needs an elbow or bend, each branch needs a tee, each size change needs a reducer, and each tap or fixture needs a threaded connection. Add unions and valves wherever a section or piece of equipment may need to be isolated or removed.

Match every fitting to the pipe size and schedule, and confirm with your plumber whether plain or threaded versions are needed. The Schedule 40 vs Schedule 80 guide explains how schedule affects this choice. Include solvent cement and primer suited to the pipe size, and review installation best practices for ASTM pipes and fittings before work begins. Frequently asked questions

What are the most common UPVC pipe fittings in a home?

Couplers, 90° elbows, tees, reducers, threaded adapters, end caps and ball valves appear in most household cold water layouts.

What is the difference between a coupler and a union?

Both join two pipes of the same size. A coupler forms a permanent solvent-cement joint, while a union can be opened later for maintenance without cutting the pipe.

What is the difference between MTA and FTA?

An MTA has external (male) threads and an FTA has internal (female) threads. The choice depends on the threads of the tap, valve or component being connected.

Can UPVC fittings be joined directly to CPVC pipes?

No. The two systems follow different dimensional standards, so a purpose-made UPVC-CPVC converter coupler is used at the transition point.

Are ASTM UPVC fittings suitable for hot water?

ASTM PVC-U pipes and fittings are intended for cold water applications. Hot water lines typically use CPVC pipes and fittings.
